The disappearance of Donald James Wimer began when family members reported him missing on March 30, 2022. The 54-year-old White male had last been seen in Joplin, Missouri, prompting an immediate investigation by local authorities. Officers commenced a search that eventually led them to a residence located at 2201 South Jackson Avenue the following afternoon. Inside the home, detectives discovered Wimer’s body, and early assessments indicated that he had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
An autopsy was subsequently ordered to confirm the exact cause of death, while investigators worked quickly to piece together the events leading to the homicide.
As the inquiry progressed, detectives identified a primary suspect, 44-year-old James A. Weiss, Jr., also a resident of Joplin. Information gathered by law enforcement directed them to a separate property at 2201 South Empire Avenue on the evening of March 31, 2022. Police obtained a search warrant for the address as well as an arrest warrant for Weiss in connection with the death investigation. When officers arrived and attempted to make contact, the situation escalated into a standoff. The Joplin Police Department’s SWAT team was deployed after Weiss refused to exit the residence despite repeated commands.
During the confrontation, the suspect set fire to the structure, complicating the efforts of the responding units. Despite attempts to negotiate a peaceful surrender, the standoff concluded when Weiss took his own life. Preliminary reports stated that he died from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound. Following these events, authorities confirmed that they were not seeking any additional suspects related to the case, determining that the threat to the public had ended. The investigation remained open pending final autopsy results and forensic analysis to formally conclude the details of the murder-suicide sequence.
