In the late summer of 2018, the life of 33-year-old Diamond James Bradley, a Black/African American man, was tragically cut short in Joplin, Missouri. On the morning of August 29th, events unfolded at the Economy Inn & Suites that would end in violence. An altercation between Bradley and another man, 24-year-old Kosaksy Phillip, escalated, resulting in Phillip fatally shooting Bradley.
The gunshots rang out in a room at the motel, and when police arrived around 11:49 a.m., they found Bradley wounded. He was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he succumbed to them later that day. An autopsy would later confirm that he had been shot four times.
The immediate aftermath of the shooting sent a ripple of fear through the area, prompting a temporary lockdown of a nearby elementary school and several businesses as law enforcement began their search for the shooter. The manhunt for Kosaksy Phillip, who had fled the scene, lasted for several hours. Investigators eventually located and arrested him in the vicinity of the motel where the shooting had occurred. Phillip was taken into custody without further incident, bringing the search to a close and beginning the next chapter in a tragic story of a life taken too soon.
Following his arrest, Kosaksy Phillip was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action for the death of Diamond Bradley. The legal process moved forward, and in September of the following year, Phillip appeared in Jasper County Circuit Court. There, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder. As a result of his guilty plea, the initial charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action were dropped. The court sentenced Kosaksy Phillip to a term of 20 years in prison for his role in the death of Diamond Bradley, bringing a legal conclusion to the case, though the loss for Bradley's family and friends would forever remain.
