In the small town of Lawson, Missouri, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragedy that ended the life of 47-year-old Patty Neary, a white female. On the evening of April 27, 2024, an argument between Patty and her husband, 49-year-old Lawrence Patrick Neary IV, turned violent inside their home.
According to Lawrence's account to investigators, the argument began in the evening, leading to Patty allegedly grabbing his handgun and pointing it at him. He claimed to have disarmed her, but the confrontation continued. As Patty attempted to leave their bedroom, a physical struggle ensued, causing her to fall into a closet. It was then, Lawrence stated, that he fired the gun, intending only to scare her.
However, the evidence discovered by law enforcement painted a much grimmer picture. Patty Neary was found in the bedroom closet with multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators located five shell casings near her body, suggesting a series of shots rather than a single warning. The evidence indicated that Patty was on her back in the confined space of the closet when she was shot multiple times.
Following the incident, Lawrence fled the residence but was apprehended at an associate's home shortly after and taken into custody without incident. He has since been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Authorities reported inconsistencies in his story, particularly his claim of firing warning shots. Lawrence is being held without bond at the Ray County Detention Center. The community has been left to mourn the loss of a woman remembered as a loving mother and friend.
