Camila Behrensen, a 24-year-old female from Argentina, was a promising predoctoral researcher at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research in Kansas City, Missouri. In the early morning hours of October 1, 2022, the Kansas City Fire Department responded to a fire at her midtown apartment. After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters made a grim discovery; the bodies of Behrensen and her colleague, 25-year-old Pablo Guzmán Palma of Chile.
It was apparent that the two had not perished in the fire but were victims of a homicide, having suffered from trauma before the fire was intentionally set.
The Kansas City Police Department launched an intensive investigation into the double homicide. Detectives processed the scene for evidence and canvassed the neighborhood for any witnesses who might have seen or heard something suspicious. The Stowers Institute, where both Behrensen and Palma were vibrant members of the 2020 predoctoral research class, expressed their devastation at the tragic loss of two brilliant young scientists. Behrensen was remembered for her work studying metabolic changes in fruit flies and her aspirations of one day leading her own research group.
Through the use of phone and computer data, surveillance videos, ballistic testing, and DNA evidence, investigators were able to identify a suspect in the murders. The man responsible for the deaths of Camila Behrensen and Pablo Guzmán Palma was identified as 42-year-old Kevin Ray Moore. However, there would be no arrest or trial. On October 16, 2022, Moore was found dead in what was determined to be a murder-suicide, completely unrelated to the double homicide he had committed weeks earlier. The connection between Moore and the two researchers, and his motive for the killings, remain unknown. The Stowers Institute confirmed that Moore had no affiliation with their institution.
