On October 17, 2019, a violent triple homicide occurred in Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the lives of three individuals, including 42-year-old Larona 'Rhonda' Jones. The Black female victim was at a residence near East 45th Street and South Benton Avenue when the incident took place. Larona, known to her friends and family as a caring woman who worked as a dialysis technician, was watching a football game at the home during the evening hours.
Authorities later described the gathering as the setting for a drug transaction that escalated into deadly violence, resulting in gunfire that drew the immediate attention of law enforcement officers patrolling nearby.
Police arrived at the scene after hearing the shots and discovered a chaotic aftermath. Officers found Larry Barnes lying deceased outside the residence, surrounded by rifle shell casings. Inside the home, they located the bodies of Larona Jones and another woman, Brandy Jones, both of whom had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. As police secured the area, they observed a woman, later identified as Lynnsey D. Jones, attempting to enter a vehicle while holding a rifle. She was promptly taken into custody. A second suspect, Victor Sykes, attempted to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended by officers a short distance away. Sykes was found wearing gloves and had visible blood on his hands.
The investigation revealed that Lynnsey Jones and Sykes had gone to the home under the pretense of purchasing narcotics. During police interviews, Lynnsey Jones provided shifting accounts of the events, initially claiming that an argument between two men outside led to the shooting and that she had been handed the weapon. However, she eventually admitted to shooting all three victims, chillingly telling detectives she did so because she was a 'bad person.' Sykes denied involvement, claiming he ran because he was on parole for a previous murder conviction in Kansas, but forensic evidence and the circumstances of his capture linked him to the crime.
Legal proceedings against the pair resulted in significant convictions. Prosecutors charged both suspects with three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of armed criminal action. In November 2021, a Jackson County jury found Lynnsey Jones guilty on all charges, and she was subsequently sentenced to three consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 30 years. Victor Sykes was also found guilty of three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of armed criminal action, ensuring that both individuals responsible for the deaths of Larona Jones and the other victims faced severe legal consequences for their actions.
