On the evening of April 10, 2024, tragedy struck in a residential neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri, when 11-year-old Kourtney Freeman was fatally shot inside her home. The young girl, a student at Ewing Marion Kauffman School known for her love of basketball and participation in a local step team, was in her house on the 3300 block of Flora Avenue in the Ivanhoe neighborhood. Just before 10:00 p.m., gunfire erupted from outside the residence, with bullets penetrating the structure.
First responders arrived to find the female victim unresponsive; she was transported to a local hospital where she was subsequently pronounced dead.
Investigators determined that the shooting was not random but rather a targeted attack on the home, though Kourtney herself was not the intended target. The investigation utilized surveillance footage and license plate readers to identify a vehicle associated with the crime, a Chevrolet Equinox. This evidence, along with ballistics and DNA found on a firearm recovered during a search, led police to a suspect. In May 2024, authorities arrested a teenager in connection with the homicide. The suspect, identified as Re'Mori T. Roath, was sixteen years old at the time of the offense but was later certified to stand trial as an adult due to the severity of the crime.
Legal proceedings against Roath moved forward in the Jackson County court system. He was initially charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action. In November 2025, Roath pleaded guilty to second-degree felony murder, admitting his role in the shooting that claimed Kourtney's life. As part of the plea agreement, the additional charges were dismissed. A sentencing hearing for Roath was scheduled for late January 2026, bringing a measure of closure to a case that had sparked significant community outcry and calls for reduced violence in the area.
