On July 20, 2024, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Kansas City, Missouri, police responded to reports of a shooting near the intersection of 9th Street and Prospect Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered 25-year-old Melquan T. West-Yancey suffering from gunshot wounds at 9th and Chestnut Avenue. Emergency responders administered life-saving measures before transporting him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
