In the Park Hill neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, a life was tragically cut short on the morning of April 28, 2018. Dwayne Sensley, a Black male, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the 1700 block of St. Louis Avenue just after 11 a.m. While most sources report his age as 27, another indicates he was 20 years old. Emergency responders transported him to University Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died shortly after arrival.
The investigation into the
shooting quickly led police to a suspect, 27-year-old Brandon Johnson. Johnson was arrested the same day as the incident. According to investigators, Johnson admitted to shooting Sensley. He claimed that he caught Sensley leaving his home through the back door and shot him in the back as he fled. This account, however, was contrasted by statements from neighbors who reported hearing no argument before the gunshots rang out, adding a layer of mystery to the moments preceding the violence.
Following his confession, authorities charged Johnson with murder, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, receiving stolen property, and tampering with physical evidence. Police later recovered the firearm used in the shooting, which had been hidden in the basement of Johnson's residence. A judge set his bond at $1 million. In a later development, in August 2021, Johnson escaped from home incarceration by cutting off his ankle monitor. His time as a fugitive came to an end over a year later when he was taken back into custody in August 2022 to face the charges related to Sensley's death.
