In a moment that shattered an ordinary Sunday afternoon, Dayshawn Tolbert, a 37-year-old man from Louisville, Kentucky, lost his life in a senseless act of violence. On May 24, 2020, what began as a verbal dispute at a Kroger gas station on West Broadway escalated into a fatal shooting. Tolbert was at the gas pumps when he became embroiled in an argument with another man.
The disagreement tragically culminated in the other individual drawing a handgun and firing multiple shots.
Tolbert was struck by the gunfire and sustained a fatal wound. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 3:30 p.m., and he was rushed to the University of Louisville Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Dayshawn Tolbert succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 3:59 p.m. The Jefferson County Coroner's office later confirmed that his death was the result of a gunshot wound. The incident was particularly harrowing as several other people were in the vicinity and put in danger by the gunfire.
In the wake of the shooting, the Louisville Metro Police Department launched an investigation. A suspect, identified as 21-year-old Carl B. Hardin III, was arrested in connection with the incident. Hardin was subsequently charged with murder and wanton endangerment. He was taken into custody and booked into the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections. The investigation was aided by a video of the altercation that surfaced, capturing the events that led to Tolbert's untimely death.
