In the pre-dawn hours of June 29, 2020, in Kansas City, Missouri, four-year-old LeGend Taliferro, a Black male, was asleep in a first-floor apartment at the Citadel complex. Gunshots suddenly pierced the quiet, fired from behind a privacy fence and through the sliding glass doors of the apartment, striking the young boy. He was rushed to a local hospital by a family member but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting was not a random act of violence; detectives believed the apartment was specifically targeted. The senseless killing of a child sleeping in his bed sent shockwaves through the Kansas City community and beyond.
The investigation into LeGend's death quickly focused on a suspect named Ryson B. Ellis. The motive appeared to be rooted in a domestic dispute. A woman who was present in the apartment at the time of the shooting had a child with Ellis and had recently been assaulted by him. This assault led to a confrontation between Ellis and the woman's brothers, one of whom was LeGend's father. In the days following the altercation, the woman received threatening messages from Ellis on social media. Witness statements and anonymous tips played a crucial role in identifying Ellis as the primary suspect.
