LaKeasha 'London' Taylor, a 22-year-old female, was fatally shot on February 17th in a home located in the 6400 block of East 12th Terrace. Remembered for her infectious laughter and vibrant spirit, Taylor had a passion for life that she encouraged in others, urging them to 'do more than just exist.'
She had completed her high school education and was actively pursuing a career in cosmetology by attending hair-styling school.
The events that led to her untimely death began as a lighthearted exchange of jokes between Taylor, her boyfriend Aaron Melbert, and another resident of the house. What started as playful banter reportedly took a dark turn when the jokes were directed at 18-year-old Marlon D. Davis, Jr. Enraged by the comments, Davis allegedly went to the basement of the house, retrieved a firearm, and returned to shoot Taylor. Her life ended abruptly in an act of what friends and family described as senseless violence. Even in her final moments, those who knew her said she was laughing.
In the days following the tragic event, the community mourned the loss of a young woman known for her love of 'Hello Kitty' and her ability to find joy in life despite recent hardships, including the death of her mother within the past year. A vigil was held in her honor, where pink 'Hello Kitty' balloons were released into the sky, a poignant tribute to a life ended too soon. Friends and family gathered to share memories and call for an end to gun violence in their community.
The Kansas City Police Department investigated the homicide, and on February 21, 2019, prosecutors charged Marlon D. Davis, Jr. with second-degree murder in connection with LaKeasha Taylor's death. The incident served as a grim reminder of how quickly a seemingly harmless situation could escalate into a fatal encounter, leaving a void in the lives of those who knew and loved a young woman with a bright future ahead of her.
