In the late summer of 2018, the life of 24-year-old Craig Crisp was tragically cut short in a violent encounter in Antioch, Tennessee. On the evening of August 11th, Crisp was fatally shot during an attempted robbery at the Hickory Lakes Apartments. The incident left the community shaken and prompted a swift investigation by law enforcement.
Detectives quickly identified two suspects in connection with the senseless killing: 18-year-old Michael Russell and his 15-year-old accomplice,
Brandon Caruthers. The pair were also suspected in another robbery that had occurred at the same apartment complex just a week prior. The investigation gained momentum with the apprehension of Russell, who was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder and aggravated robbery. During questioning, Russell implicated himself in the crime, providing investigators with crucial details about the night Craig Crisp lost his life.
While Michael Russell was in custody, Brandon Caruthers remained at large. His time as a fugitive was marked by further defiance of the law. In November 2019, Caruthers, who was being held at a juvenile detention center on other charges, managed to escape the facility, sparking a widely publicized manhunt. His freedom was short-lived, however, as he was recaptured in December of the same year in Antioch, not far from the scene of the original crime. At the time of his recapture, he was facing an aggravated robbery charge in adult court, in addition to the escape charges.
The legal proceedings for both individuals eventually brought a measure of justice for Craig Crisp. Michael Russell was convicted of second-degree murder for his role in the shooting. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The resolution of the charges against Brandon Caruthers for his involvement in the murder is not as publicly documented, though he faced significant legal consequences for his other offenses.
