On a spring afternoon in Antioch, Tennessee, a dispute over a mere one hundred dollars escalated into a fatal encounter that claimed the life of Anthony Lovell Carter. The 31-year-old Black man had gone to the Hickory Hollow Terrace apartment complex on May 16, 2022, accompanied by three friends, to speak with 26-year-old Tracy Jackson about money Carter believed he was owed.
After a discussion concerning the alleged debt, Carter and his friends were attempting to leave the complex in
their BMW SUV. As they paused at the gated entrance, Jackson reportedly pulled his vehicle up behind them. What began as a verbal confrontation quickly turned physical. In a sudden escalation of violence, Jackson produced a handgun and opened fire on Carter, striking him multiple times.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Carter's friends, who were still in the vehicle, returned fire in what was described as an act of self-defense. Jackson, who was grazed by the return fire, fled to his apartment. He was later taken by a private vehicle to a local hospital before being transferred to TriStar Skyline Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Carter was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but tragically, he was pronounced dead.
Following his release from the hospital, authorities were prepared to take Tracy Jackson into custody on a criminal homicide warrant. The investigation into the fatal shooting was initiated, with the argument over the $100 debt being considered the primary motive for the deadly confrontation.
