In the late hours of a Saturday in Jackson, Mississippi, a dispute outside a gas station escalated into a tragedy that would cut short a young man's life. On February 24, 2018, 25-year-old Craig Johnson, a Black male, was at the Jasco on Woodrow Wilson Avenue when an argument broke out. The heated exchange quickly turned violent, and gunshots rang out in the parking lot, leaving two men wounded.
Craig Johnson was fatally shot during the altercation.
Another man, Corey Johnson, was also injured in the shooting. The incident prompted an investigation by local law enforcement, who soon identified a suspect in the fatal shooting. The community was left to grapple with another act of gun violence that had claimed a young life.
In March 2018, the investigation led to the arrest of Kareem Boykins. He was charged with first-degree murder for the death of Craig Johnson and aggravated assault for the injuries sustained by Corey Johnson. The case moved through the legal system, and Boykins's trial commenced on November 9, 2021, with the Hinds County District Attorney's office prosecuting the case and seeking justice for the victims.
