On a tragic day in Jackson, Mississippi, Captain Stanley C. Adams, a 45-year-old male officer with the Jackson Fire Department, was killed in a violent rampage carried out by a disgruntled fellow firefighter. The events of April 24, 1996, began when firefighter Kenneth Tornes fatally shot his 42-year-old estranged wife, Glenda Tornes, at their home.
Following this initial act of violence, Tornes proceeded to the central fire station, intent on confronting his supervisors.
Witnesses at the firehouse described a tense scene as Tornes, armed with a rifle, bypassed a coworker with a chilling warning to 'get back, I am going to blow the place up!' He then moved through the offices, specifically targeting his superiors. In the ensuing attack, Tornes shot and killed four of his supervisors: Captain Stanley C. Adams, Captain Merideth Moree, 49, District Chief Dwight Craft, 48, and District Chief Rick Robbins, 47. Two other individuals were also wounded during the shooting. Coworkers later revealed that Tornes had been expressing his anger towards the chiefs for years and was considered 'a time bomb waiting to go off,' reportedly feeling slighted by recent reprimands.
After the massacre at the fire station, Tornes fled the scene, leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase that ended in the parking lot of a shopping center in the nearby suburb of Ridgeland. A shootout with police ensued, during which Tornes wounded an officer before being shot in his left eye and apprehended.
Kenneth Tornes was arrested and subsequently stood trial for the killings. On April 3, 1998, he was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death for his crimes. However, Tornes would not be executed for his actions. He died on death row on April 9, 2000, from a blood clot. Prior to his death, he had also pleaded guilty and received a life sentence for the murder of his wife.
