On August 19, 2019, 28-year-old Sandrina Khan was found suffering from a fatal gunshot wound at a residence in the 5200 block of Sycamore Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. Police were dispatched to the home shortly after 4:00 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered the female victim collapsed on the front stoop of the house with a gunshot wound to her chest. The glass front door of the residence had been shattered by gunfire.
Emergency responders transported her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
During the subsequent investigation, witnesses reported hearing an argument between Khan and a man on the front porch just prior to the shooting. Onlookers described the male subject as wearing blue 'hospital' gloves during the altercation. At least two individuals heard five to six gunshots before observing the man flee the scene in a vehicle. Inside the home, officers found a young child in a walker moving about the living room; the child was unharmed during the violence. Khan’s mother later informed detectives that her daughter had an active full order of protection against the father of her child, identifying him as the likely aggressor.
Authorities identified the suspect as 32-year-old Michael D. Garrett. Investigators uncovered a series of threatening text messages sent by Garrett to the victim in the days leading up to the homicide. The messages reportedly included explicit threats such as 'I'm kill both y'all,' 'Can't wait to you die,' and 'I'm gonna over kill you.' Further inquiries revealed that Garrett had been seen driving a vehicle similar to the one observed leaving the crime scene.
In May 2020, prosecutors announced that Michael D. Garrett had been taken into custody at his Kansas City home. He was charged with first-degree murder, endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful use of a weapon, and three counts of armed criminal action. During police interviews, Garrett allegedly admitted to owning the vehicle seen on the day of the murder and acknowledged the threatening text messages before requesting an attorney. Prosecutors noted a history of domestic violence incidents involving the suspect and requested a cash bond of $200,000.
