In the early morning hours of July 5, 2024, a violent tragedy unfolded at a residence on West Chestnut Street in Springfield, Missouri, claiming the lives of two individuals. Officers from the Springfield Police Department were dispatched to the home at approximately 3:12 a.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a chaotic scene where 46-year-old Jack Osborn was found deceased at the location, having succumbed to a gunshot wound.
A second victim, 44-year-old female Melissa Estelle Evans Smith, was also discovered suffering from gunshot injuries. Emergency responders transported her to a local hospital in critical condition, but despite medical intervention, she later died from her wounds, marking the city's sixth and seventh homicide victims of the year.
As detectives launched their investigation into the double homicide, witness accounts and surveillance evidence began to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. It was reported that a man, later identified as 39-year-old Jeffrey Garrett of St. Louis, had arrived at the residence but was refused entry. According to court documents, a witness indicated that Garrett had made unwanted sexual advances toward Melissa, which she rejected. Following this altercation, surveillance systems nearby captured audio of the gunshots that ended the lives of both victims. Investigators quickly identified Garrett as the prime suspect, but he had already fled the area before law enforcement could apprehend him.
In the days following the shooting, the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office formally charged Garrett with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action. A manhunt ensued, stretching across state lines as authorities tracked the fugitive’s movements. For over three months, Garrett managed to evade capture, reportedly traveling with a female companion and claiming to be visiting relatives. The search eventually led law enforcement to a Budget Inn in Waynesboro, Mississippi, where investigators received information that the suspect was hiding.
On October 14, 2024, the pursuit came to an end when officers in Mississippi, acting on tips and coordination with Springfield police and U.S. Marshals, surrounded Garrett's motel room. After initially refusing to exit, he surrendered to authorities without further violence. He was taken into custody to await extradition back to Missouri, where he faces charges for the murders of Melissa Evans and Jack Osborn, with a judge ordering him to be held without bond as the legal process against him moves forward.
