On the afternoon of April 15, 2025, authorities in Springfield, Missouri, were alerted to a situation requiring a well-being check at the John B. Hughes Apartments located at 2100 North Clifton Avenue. Officers from the Springfield Police Department arrived at the complex at approximately 3:56 p.m. to investigate the welfare of the occupants inside one of the units.
Upon entering the apartment, they discovered a tragic scene involving two deceased adults and four surviving children.
Inside the residence, police found the body of 21-year-old female Katrina Dotson, who had suffered fatal gunshot wounds. Also discovered deceased in the apartment was 21-year-old Andrew Calton. Investigators from the Springfield Homicide Unit determined that Calton had shot and killed Dotson before turning the weapon on himself. Calton died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.
Four juveniles were present in the apartment at the time of the shooting but were physically unharmed. Police ensured the children were safe and notified the families of both deceased individuals. As the primary suspect, Andrew Calton, died by suicide immediately following the homicide, there were no arrests, trials, or convictions associated with the case. Detectives continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the event, marking it as the city's fifth homicide investigation of the year.
