In the winter of 2023, the life of 64-year-old Michael Douglas Hancock, a Black male, was tragically cut short in what would become the first homicide of the year in Roanoke, Virginia. On the evening of January 8th, police were called to a residence in the 800 block of 30th Street Northwest. Inside, they discovered Hancock, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death of Michael Hancock led authorities to 48-year-old
Charlotte Renee Saunders, also of Roanoke. Just a week after Hancock's body was found, on January 15, 2023, Saunders was taken into custody on charges that were not immediately related to the homicide. However, during questioning by detectives, she provided a detailed account of her involvement in Hancock's death. This confession prompted law enforcement to charge her with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
In March of the following year, the case against Charlotte Renee Saunders came to a resolution. She entered into a plea agreement, which resulted in her conviction for the lesser charge of second-degree murder. The court sentenced her to a term of 40 years in prison. However, 30 of those years were suspended, leaving Saunders to serve a mandatory 10 years of incarceration for her role in the death of Michael Douglas Hancock. A funeral service for Hancock was held on January 21, 2023, at Serenity Funeral Home as the community mourned his loss.
