In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Roanoke, Virginia, tragedy struck the Cunningham family once again. Isaac 'Ike' Lamonte Cunningham, a 43-year-old male, was found with fatal gunshot wounds just after midnight on August 3, 2025. Officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 200 block of 12th Street SW around 12:28 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Cunningham outside of a vehicle; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
This senseless act of violence compounded the family's grief, as Isaac's 15-year-old son, also named Isaac Cunningham, had been shot and killed in June of the previous year.
The investigation into Cunningham's death quickly led to arrests. Initially, a 16-year-old male was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Later, reports indicated that two brothers were charged in connection with the fatal shooting. The suspects were identified as 18-year-old Jaward Saunders and his 16-year-old brother.
