In the early morning hours of May 14, 2018, the day after his twenty-third birthday, Keonte K. Johnson, a male resident of Salem, Virginia, was fatally shot at a house party on Enon Drive in the Hollins area of Roanoke County. The gathering had drawn the attention of police earlier that morning, around 4:10 a.m., due to noise complaints, though no official action was taken at that time.
A few hours later, shortly before 7 a.m., law enforcement was called back to the residence for reports of gunfire. Upon their arrival, they discovered a chaotic scene with three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Two of the victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment, while Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting unfolded over the next fourteen months, culminating in the arrest of Patrick McDonald, a 29-year-old decorated U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Investigators determined that an altercation between Johnson and McDonald at the party had escalated, leading to the deadly shooting. In June 2019, McDonald was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Johnson's death. It was reported that there were no other suspects in the case.
Following his arrest, McDonald was released on bond. His attorney stated that McDonald, who had been honorably discharged and was a recipient of a Purple Heart, suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder from his military service and would be claiming self-defense. The news of McDonald's release was met with anguish by Johnson's family, who expressed their desire for justice for the man they described as a hardworking and protective father, brother, and son. Johnson was remembered for his bright smile and outgoing personality and was employed with Atlas Warehouse. He was a father to a daughter and a son.
