In the summer of 2013, the Roanoke community was shaken by the violent death of a beloved local figure. Jeffrey Darnell Mayo, a 44-year-old Black man, was found murdered in his home on Grandin Road on July 3, 2013. An investigation by the Roanoke Police Department revealed that he had died from multiple gunshot wounds. The circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately clear, and authorities began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to the tragedy.
