On the evening of January 28, 2023, the life of 36-year-old Eldridge Vandrew Smith, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Charlottesville, Virginia. At approximately 9:41 p.m., police responded to reports of gunfire in the 1100 block of Grove Street. Upon arrival, they discovered Smith inside an SUV, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide led Charlottesville Police Department detectives to 38-year-old Tadashi Demetrius Keyes, also a resident of Charlottesville. Keyes was arrested and initially charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The murder charge was later upgraded to first-degree murder by a grand jury.
During the trial, video evidence was presented showing Keyes and Smith together in the vehicle shortly before the fatal shooting. A Ring doorbell camera captured the sound of the 14 shots that were fired. Text messages revealed that just half an hour before he was killed, Smith was attempting to recruit Keyes into the B.U.C.K. Squad, an anti-gun violence group of which Smith was a member. Despite this, a clear motive for the shooting was not established during the trial.
In September 2023, a jury convicted Tadashi Demetrius Keyes of first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Subsequently, Keyes was sentenced to life in prison. This was reportedly Keyes' second life sentence; he had previously been sentenced to life for drug and gun charges but had his sentence reduced and had been out of prison for only four months before killing Smith. While Keyes offered his condolences to Smith's family in court, he did not provide an apology.
