In the quiet neighborhood of Venable in Charlottesville, Virginia, the evening of April 9, 2024, was shattered by violence that claimed the life of 31-year-old Deqwane Brown. At approximately 7:30 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting near the intersection of 12th Street and Rosser Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered Brown inside a vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident marked the first homicide in Charlottesville for the year 2024.
Deqwane, known to many as 'Buck,' was a father to two daughters and was eagerly anticipating the birth of his son. He had recently earned his commercial driver's license from Piedmont Virginia Community College and harbored aspirations of starting his own trucking company. Described as a hardworking and determined individual, his primary goal was to provide for his children and be an active presence in their lives. He had just dropped off his six-year-old daughter after sharing a meal with her before the fatal shooting occurred.
The investigation into Brown's death quickly led authorities to a suspect. The Charlottesville Police Department identified Sidney Montcellus Stinnie as the individual connected to the homicide and obtained arrest warrants for him. The charges against Stinnie included second-degree murder, use or display of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a violent felon. Initially, Stinnie was considered armed and at large. However, he later turned himself in to the authorities.
