On March 18, 2023, 26-year-old Charlottesville resident and University of Virginia contractor, Cody Brian Smith, was fatally shot in a parking lot near Elliewood Avenue, an area adjacent to the university campus. The incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m., and Smith succumbed to his injuries at approximately 5:31 a.m.
