In the pre-dawn hours of March 18, 2023, the life of 26-year-old Cody Brian Smith, a male contractor for the University of Virginia, was tragically cut short. The fatal encounter unfolded in a parking lot near Elliewood Avenue, an area adjacent to the university's grounds in Charlottesville, Virginia. Shortly before 3 a.m., a dispute escalated to violence, and Smith was shot. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 5:31 a.m. The initial moments of the investigation were marked by an urgent search for a suspect who was believed to have fled the scene in a silver, four-door sedan, heading east on West Main Street.
The investigation into Cody Brian Smith's death moved swiftly. Just two days after the shooting, on March 20, 2023, Charlottesville detectives, in collaboration with the Albemarle County Police Department, executed multiple search warrants. These actions led to a significant breakthrough in the case with the arrest of 21-year-old Lakori Brooks, a resident of Charlottesville. Brooks was taken into custody and subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The legal proceedings that followed shed light on the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting. It was revealed that the confrontation between Lakori Brooks and Cody Brian Smith, who were known to each other, originated from a personal conflict. The dispute reportedly began inside the Biltmore bar concerning a conversation Smith had with Brooks's girlfriend, a woman Smith had previously dated during a period when she and Brooks had separated. In February, Brooks entered a guilty plea to the charges brought against him. As a result of his conviction, he was sentenced to a total of 43 years in prison, with 15 of those years suspended. Following his 28-year active sentence, Brooks will be subject to five years of supervised probation.
