In the early morning hours of October 23, 2022, the lively atmosphere of the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville, Virginia, was shattered by gunfire. Davonn Jamar Wilson, a 31-year-old Black man, was tragically killed in the incident. The events that led to his death began inside a local restaurant and bar, Lucky Blue's, where an altercation broke out. As the situation escalated, Wilson attempted to flee the establishment.
A gunman followed Wilson out of the bar and continued to fire at him on the 200 block of West Main Street. Wilson sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was later pronounced dead at the University of Virginia Medical Center. During the shooting, two female bystanders were also struck by gunfire; they sustained non-life-threatening injuries and survived.
The Charlottesville Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting. Their efforts, in collaboration with the Charlottesville Commonwealth's Attorney's Office and the United States Marshals Service, quickly identified a suspect. On October 28, 2022, Marcel Darell Washington, a resident of Charlotte, North Carolina, was arrested in Tennessee in connection with Wilson's murder. He was subsequently extradited to Charlottesville to face charges.
Initially, Washington was charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. In May 2023, a grand jury indicted him on these charges, as well as two additional counts of malicious wounding for the injuries sustained by the two women. Ultimately, Marcel Darell Washington pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and malicious wounding. A judge, who described the case as one of the worst he had seen, sentenced him to 80 years in prison for his role in the death of Davonn Wilson and the injuring of two others.
