On the night of November 5, 2020, in the 900 block of South First Street in Charlottesville, Virginia, a shooting incident shattered the evening calm. Responding to the report, Charlottesville Police officers discovered a male with a gunshot wound. Immediate life-saving efforts were administered at the scene until paramedics arrived. The victim, identified as 27-year-old Dre’Shawn Rayvon McDonald, a resident of Charlottesville, was rushed to the University of Virginia Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead a short time later.
The investigation into the death of the male victim began immediately, with officers, forensic personnel, and detectives working through the night to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Their efforts quickly led to the identification of a suspect. The following morning, authorities announced they had obtained warrants for the arrest of 22-year-old Tajuan Rahmeen Allen of Fluvanna County. The charges against Allen included second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Following a search, Tajuan Allen was taken into custody in Pennsylvania on November 29, 2020. Later, in a significant development in the case, Tajuan Rahmeen Allen pleaded guilty to the murder of Dre'Shawn McDonald on June 10, 2024. Reports indicate that at the time of the offense, Allen had a prior conviction for pistol-whipping, choking, and firing a gun at a female friend in 2016. The homicide of Dre'Shawn McDonald was one of several shooting incidents that prompted discussions within the Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority's safety committee about the implementation of surveillance cameras to enhance security in the area.
