In May of 2019, the life of a young man, Cody Jason Cappel, a 24-year-old male, was tragically cut short in Charlottesville, Virginia. His body was discovered on the evening of Thursday, May 16, 2019, along the Rivanna River Trail, behind Peter Jefferson Parkway in Albemarle County. An investigation into his death revealed that Cappel had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, which were determined to be the cause of his death.
The authorities swiftly launched an investigation into the
suspicious circumstances surrounding Cappel's death, treating it as an isolated incident. Their efforts quickly led to a breakthrough in the case. On Friday, the day after Cappel's body was found, the Albemarle County Police Department made an arrest in connection with the fatal shooting. The individual taken into custody was identified as 49-year-old Allan Ray Via.
Further investigation revealed that Cappel and Via were not strangers; they were described as acquaintances. It was reported that both men were living in tents in an area near the trail where the shooting took place. Following his arrest, Allan Ray Via was charged with second-degree murder in the killing of Cody Jason Cappel. In addition to the murder charge, Via also faced a charge for possessing ammunition as a convicted felon, with law enforcement indicating that further charges were pending.
