In the quiet evening of February 21, 2023, the Timberland Apartments in Charlottesville, Virginia, became the scene of a sudden and tragic event. Responding to reports of shots fired shortly after 9:30 p.m., Albemarle County Police officers discovered a man in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. The man was identified as 34-year-old Joshua Lamont Jones, a resident of Charlottesville.
He was quickly transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of the male victim spanned 600 days, a long and arduous journey for both the detectives and the grieving family of Jones. For over a year and a half, the Albemarle County Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division worked to piece together the evidence and identify those responsible for the senseless act of violence. The community was left in suspense, waiting for a break in a case that was a stark reminder of the impact of gun violence. Investigators pursued leads, hoping to bring a measure of peace to a family whose lives had been irrevocably altered.
A significant breakthrough in the case came in October 2024 when a grand jury handed down indictments for two Albemarle County men. Twenty-two-year-olds Torius Jihad Price and Taquarius Olando Catoe-Anderson were arrested and charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. At the time of his arrest on these new charges, Price was already incarcerated on unrelated drug charges. Investigators revealed a heartbreaking detail: they believe Joshua Lamont Jones was not the intended target and that he did not know his assailants.
The investigation also uncovered the involvement of a third individual connected to Jones's death. However, this third suspect, identified as Justice Kilel, would never face charges. Just ten days after Jones was killed, Kilel himself was murdered in March 2023 at the SunShine Mini Mart on Cherry Avenue in Charlottesville, becoming another victim in a string of violence that marked the early months of that year. While the arrests of Price and Catoe-Anderson brought a sense of progress, the full scope of the tragedy highlighted a deeper cycle of violence within the community. Catoe-Anderson was scheduled for a court appearance in Albemarle County Circuit Court on December 2nd.
