In the quiet community of Free Union, Virginia, a tragic and violent encounter unfolded, leading to the death of a dedicated law enforcement officer. Deputy Sheriff Thomas Wolfe of the Albemarle County Sheriff's Office, a man who had served his community for 14 years, lost his life in the line of duty.
The incident began when Deputy Wolfe and another deputy were dispatched to a residence to question a man who had reportedly fired shots into a neighbor's home on two consecutive days. This was not the first time the man, who was a deaf mute, had been the subject of a law enforcement response, as he had previously fired at officers several months earlier after being reported missing. To facilitate communication, a neighbor accompanied the two deputies.
Upon their arrival, the situation escalated dramatically. As the deputies approached, the man emerged from his house and opened fire on Deputy Wolfe, gravely wounding him. The second deputy immediately returned fire, engaging in a shootout with the suspect and managing to wound him. In a heroic effort, the other deputy was able to get the injured Deputy Wolfe into their patrol car and drive to meet an ambulance. Despite these efforts, Deputy Wolfe succumbed to his wounds two weeks later. The man responsible for the shooting died on the day of Deputy Wolfe's funeral. Deputy Wolfe was survived by his wife, son, and father.
