On a Wednesday evening in New Canton, Virginia, a dispute in the front yard of a residence on North James Madison Highway escalated to a fatal shooting on May 24, 2023. Devonte Nicholas, a 31-year-old male from Dillwyn, was found with a gunshot wound and died at the scene. Another individual, a 32-year-old man from New Canton, was also shot and transported to the hospital in critical but stable condition with life-threatening injuries.
