A celebration following a high school graduation in Richmond, Virginia, turned into a scene of tragedy, leaving 36-year-old Lorenzo “Renzo” Smith, a male, dead from gunshot wounds. On June 6, 2023, what should have been a joyous occasion for his family became a harrowing ordeal that also claimed the life of his 18-year-old stepson, Shawn Jackson.
The festive atmosphere outside the Altria Theater, where Huguenot High School had just held its commencement ceremony, was shattered by the eruption of gunfire in the adjacent Monroe Park.
The shooting was not a random act of violence. Authorities quickly identified 19-year-old Amari Ty-Jon Pollard as the suspect, alleging that the violence stemmed from a long-running dispute with Shawn Jackson. According to police reports, Pollard attended the graduation, and after an interaction with Jackson, he retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and opened fire. The ensuing chaos resulted in multiple injuries, and tragically, the deaths of both Smith and his stepson.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Amari Pollard was arrested and initially charged with two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of both Lorenzo Smith and Shawn Jackson. However, as the investigation progressed, the legal case took a significant turn. A judge later dropped the murder charge against Pollard in connection with Smith’s death. Forensic evidence presented by the Richmond Police Department indicated that Pollard did not fire the shot that killed Smith. Further investigation revealed that two unidentified juveniles also discharged firearms during the incident. However, the Commonwealth's Attorney determined that they had acted in 'defense of others,' and consequently, no charges were filed against them for any injuries that occurred.
Amari Pollard ultimately pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder of Shawn Jackson and was sentenced to 43 years in prison, with 18 years suspended. Despite the conviction for his stepson's murder, the question of who is responsible for Lorenzo Smith's death remains officially unanswered. The firearm that fired the fatal shot that struck Smith in the back has never been recovered by law enforcement. In response to the tragic events, the family of Lorenzo Smith and Shawn Jackson has filed a multi-million dollar wrongful death lawsuit against Richmond Public Schools, alleging they were aware of threats against Jackson and failed to provide adequate security.
