On the evening of March 28, 2025, a fatal shooting in Richmond, Virginia, claimed the life of 63-year-old Darnell Christian Sr., an African American male. The incident unfolded in the 1500 block of Coalter Street in the city's East End. Richmond Police officers were dispatched to the scene around 6:11 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Christian on the ground, having sustained a gunshot wound.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital for medical attention but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The ensuing investigation into Christian's death led to a swift arrest, largely thanks to the use of video technology. Investigators, with assistance from the Richmond Police Department's Capitol City Intelligence Center, reviewed video footage from the area of the shooting. This allowed them to identify a suspect, the vehicle the suspect was driving, the direction of travel, and the vehicle's license plate information. This crucial information was broadcast to patrol officers and shared with regional law enforcement agencies.
With the information gleaned from the video footage, officers from the Henrico Police Division and the Virginia State Police were able to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect's vehicle. The driver and sole occupant of the car, identified as 56-year-old Tommy Moore of Henrico, was taken into custody. Moore has since been charged with murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with the death of Darnell Christian Sr. While an arrest has been made, authorities have indicated that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting remains ongoing.
