In the summer of 2023, the life of 20-year-old Lonnie Darnell Harvey Jr. was tragically cut short in Virginia Beach, Virginia. On the evening of June 15th, what should have been a joyous family graduation party on Garfield Avenue turned into a scene of violence. It was there that Harvey was shot multiple times in the back, a brutal act that ended his promising young life.
A graduate of First Colonial High School, Harvey was remembered by loved ones as a funny, strong, and loving family man who was just beginning to establish his own life, working two jobs, including one as a maintenance technician for the city.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect. Investigators determined that at least 15 shots were fired during the incident, with Harvey sustaining six gunshot wounds. The Virginia Beach Police Department worked tirelessly to bring the perpetrator to justice. Their efforts, supported by the community, led to the identification of a person of interest in the case.
Within a week of the fatal shooting, U.S. Marshals located and arrested 24-year-old Jameson Francis. Following his arrest, Francis was charged with the murder of Lonnie Harvey Jr. After a four-day jury trial, Francis was convicted of first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The family of Lonnie Harvey Jr., while still mourning the profound loss of their beloved 'LJ,' expressed gratitude that justice was served. Jameson Francis is scheduled to be sentenced for his crimes on November 3rd.
