On June 17, 2023, 42-year-old Phillip Dewayne Murphy Jr. was fatally shot at the King's Ridge Apartments on Chalice Court in Newport News, Virginia. Police responded to reports of a shooting just before midnight and found Murphy suffering from a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene shortly thereafter.
