On a late Sunday evening in June 2014, the life of 19-year-old Rachard Timothy Lewis was tragically cut short in Newport News, Virginia. Police and paramedics responded to a report of a shooting in the 1100 block of 22nd Street at approximately 11:00 p.m. on June 22nd. Upon arrival, they discovered Lewis lying on the ground with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his head.
He was immediately transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Despite medical efforts, Rachard Timothy Lewis, a male, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 5:25 p.m. the following day, June 23, 2014. Known affectionately as 'Shotti' or 'Sha-Dawg,' Lewis was remembered as a very athletic and comical young man with a bright smile who brought laughter to those around him.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Newport News Police Department detectives began an investigation into the deadly incident. The only description of the potential assailants released to the public was of three Black men who were seen wearing dark clothing. At the time, investigators had not yet determined a motive for the shooting.
