In the quiet city of Newport News, Virginia, the life of Dr. William F. Trolenberg, a respected 65-year-old male dentist, was abruptly and violently cut short on the evening of June 19, 2019. Newport News Police responded to a report of a shooting and found Dr. Trolenberg outside his vehicle with a life-threatening gunshot wound. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. The initial investigation offered few clues as to the motive; robbery was quickly ruled out as his wallet and cash were found untouched. The community mourned, holding prayer vigils and walks in his honor, remembering a man who was not just a dentist but a friend to many.
The investigation swiftly led to a person of interest, and soon after, Kelly Michael Vance, a Navy veteran, was arrested in connection with the murder. Vance was charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Surveillance video from a nearby garage proved to be a critical piece of evidence, capturing the tragic encounter. The footage showed Vance approaching Dr. Trolenberg as he was getting into his car. After a brief conversation, Vance entered the passenger side of the vehicle, where a struggle ensued. Dr. Trolenberg was then seen falling out of his car, after which Vance exited the vehicle, stood over him, and shot him multiple times.
During the legal proceedings, the perplexing question of motive was finally answered. In a plea agreement, Vance pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in exchange for revealing why he had targeted the dentist, with whom he had no prior known connection. Vance explained that he was in a state of distress on the day of the shooting and had decided to ask a stranger for a significant sum of money. He approached Dr. Trolenberg and asked for $2,000 to $3,000. When the dentist declined and, according to Vance, touched his thigh, Vance reacted by pulling out a handgun and shooting him. In September 2022, Kelly Michael Vance was sentenced to 40 years in prison and fined $100,000 for the murder of Dr. William Trolenberg, bringing a measure of closure to a community still mourning the loss of a cherished member.
