On a late morning in June, the quiet of a Dumfries, Virginia neighborhood was shattered by gunfire. Inside a home on Fort Monroe Court on June 23, 2023, an argument escalated to a tragic conclusion, leaving 21-year-old Jeremiah Quentin Deck fatally wounded. Another man, aged 23, was also shot and hospitalized with serious injuries. The incident, which police later stated did not appear to be random, set off an urgent search for the person responsible.

responded to the residence at 9:42 a.m. to find both victims suffering from gunshot wounds to their upper bodies. First aid was rendered at the scene before both men were rushed to a nearby hospital, but Deck succumbed to his injuries. Investigators quickly learned that an argument had taken place among several people in the house. Following the dispute, the individuals separated, but one man allegedly went to the upper level of the home and opened fire on Deck and the other victim. The gunman then fled the scene in a blue 2006 Ford Explorer before police arrived.
The investigation swiftly led to the identification of a suspect: 33-year-old Daniel Christopher Shannon of Fredericksburg. Law enforcement issued a warrant for his arrest and sought public assistance in locating him, releasing his description and the details of his vehicle. A few days later, on June 27, Shannon turned himself into the authorities without incident.
Following his surrender, Daniel Christopher Shannon was charged with one count of murder for the death of Jeremiah Deck, one count of aggravated malicious wounding for the injury to the second victim, two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and one count of discharging a firearm within a dwelling. He was held without bail pending his court date.
