On the evening of March 9, 2026, in Dumfries, Virginia, 18-year-old Louis Anthony Boone was shot and killed while playing basketball. A recent graduate of Freedom High School, Boone was a freshman at Norfolk State University studying mass communications and was home for spring break. He was a promising student, actively involved in the university's newspaper, the Spartan Echo, as a photographer and was a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on a basketball court in the 1800 block of Potomac Shores Parkway. A dispute erupted between the group Boone was with and another group that had arrived at the court, which tragically escalated to gunfire. In the ensuing chaos, five individuals between the ages of 16 and 20 were shot. Boone succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The four other victims, whose ages ranged from 16 to 20, were treated for their injuries and were expected to recover.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Prince William County Police Department launched a homicide investigation. Authorities have identified 19-year-old J'Shaun Zomari Williams as a suspect and have issued warrants for his arrest on charges of murder and firearm-related offenses. Williams is described as a Black male, 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing 175 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
In connection with the same incident, a 17-year-old male from Woodbridge, who was among the injured, was arrested after his release from the hospital. He has been charged with felony homicide and weapon offenses and is being held at a juvenile detention center. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Friends and family remember Louis Boone as a joyful and energetic young man with a bright future, whose life was cut short in an act of senseless violence.
