In the late hours of a Friday night in Virginia Beach, a violent encounter led to the death of 42-year-old Joseph Hunter. On July 14, 2023, police were called to the 5400 block of Stewart Drive, located just off Lynnhaven Parkway, around 11:54 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered that Hunter had sustained gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services transported Hunter to a local hospital for treatment, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The Virginia Beach Police Department later confirmed his passing and identified him as the victim of the fatal shooting. An obituary described Hunter, known as Joe, as a native of Grenock, Scotland, who had moved to Virginia Beach at the age of six. He was a loving father, son, brother, and friend who enjoyed playing golf with his father and brothers on the weekends.
As of the initial reports, no charges had been filed in connection with the shooting, and police had not released any information regarding potential suspects or a motive for the incident. Authorities stated that they did not believe there was an ongoing danger to the community and have asked anyone with information to come forward.
