In the early hours of August 8, 2023, tragedy struck in a Newport News, Virginia home on Stallings Court. Responding to reports of gunfire shortly before 1 a.m., police officers discovered a grim scene inside the residence. Three men were found deceased, all victims of gunshot wounds. One of the victims was identified as Monroe McGilvary Jr., a 60-year-old male from Williamsburg.
The other two men were identified as 61-year-old Alvin Eugene Holiday, also of Williamsburg, and 36-year-old Derek Rico Jones of Newport News. A woman was also present in the home at the time of the shooting but was found unharmed and was the one who called 911.
For months, the case remained without a resolution, leaving the families of the victims searching for answers. The loved ones of Monroe McGilvary Jr. remembered him as a beloved family man, and his absence was deeply felt. His family, along with the families of the other victims, waited for justice as the investigation into the triple homicide continued.
A significant development in the case came in April 2025, when U.S. Marshals and Newport News police arrested 26-year-old Dimair Jones in connection with the murders. Authorities had issued warrants for his arrest and located him at a hotel. Following his apprehension, Jones was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and discharging a firearm within a dwelling. He was subsequently held at the Newport News City Jail to await his first court appearance.
