In the late summer evening of August 27, 2023, the life of 21-year-old Obie Lewis Holloway III, a Black male from Portsmouth, Virginia, was tragically cut short. At approximately 9:32 p.m., officers from the Portsmouth Police Department were dispatched to an alleyway in the 2900 block of County Street following a report of a gunshot wound. Upon their arrival, they discovered Holloway suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.
The initial stages of the investigation saw law enforcement actively seeking a person of interest in connection with the shooting. This quickly evolved into a homicide investigation as detectives worked to piece together the events that led to Holloway's death. The efforts of the Portsmouth Police Department soon yielded a significant development in the case.
Just three days later, on August 30, 2023, authorities announced that they had identified and charged a suspect. Julian Brim, a 27-year-old, was taken into custody and charged in connection with the deadly shooting that occurred near Turnpike Park. Brim's arrest marked a crucial turning point in the investigation, bringing a measure of progress to a community shaken by the violent loss of a young man.
