In the summer of 2021, the life of 14-year-old Jada Kahmari McNeill was tragically cut short in a senseless act of gun violence in Portsmouth, Virginia. On the evening of June 12th, McNeill, a male, was with another teenager, a 15-year-old boy, near Park View Elementary School on Elm Avenue when gunfire erupted. Both youths were struck by bullets, sustaining life-threatening injuries.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and transported both victims to a local hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Jada Kahmari McNeill succumbed to his injuries. The 15-year-old who was with him was left in critical condition, fighting for his life. The shooting sent shockwaves through the local community, leaving family and friends to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a young life.
In the wake of the shooting, the Portsmouth Police Department launched a homicide investigation. Detectives were able to retrieve surveillance footage from the area which showed two individuals fleeing the scene around the time of the incident. These individuals were identified as persons of interest in the case.
Despite the identification of these persons of interest, the investigation into the death of Jada Kahmari McNeill has not yet led to an arrest. As of late 2025, the case remains an active and ongoing investigation. The Portsmouth Police Department continues to seek information from the public that could lead to the apprehension and prosecution of those responsible for this tragic event.
