In the early evening of January 2, 2020, the life of 26-year-old Elijah Rahim Chavis was tragically cut short in Portsmouth, Virginia. Emergency services responded to reports of a shooting on Merrimac Drive just before 8:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Chavis suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. Despite the efforts of paramedics, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
This incident marked the second homicide in the city of Portsmouth in the new year.
Elijah, a Black male born on June 10, 1993, was a father, son, and brother known for his warm-hearted and family-oriented nature. A graduate of I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth, he was remembered by friends and family for his infectious smile, vibrant personality, and sense of humor. He was a devoted father to his children, Emoni and Shaheem.
In the wake of the shooting, the Portsmouth Police Department identified 28-year-old Deon Benson as a suspect. Benson later turned himself in to the authorities. He was subsequently charged with murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with the death of Elijah Chavis.
