In the early evening of January 2, 2020, the life of 26-year-old Elijah Rahim Chavis was tragically cut short in Portsmouth, Virginia. Emergency services responded to reports of a shooting on Merrimac Drive just before 8:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Chavis suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. Despite the efforts of paramedics, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. This incident marked the second homicide in the city of Portsmouth in the new year.
