In the early morning hours of January 8, 2023, the life of 29-year-old Javonte Martin, a Black male from Portsmouth, Virginia, was tragically cut short. The fatal incident unfolded shortly before 3:45 a.m. in the 2900 block of Elm Avenue. Responding to reports of a shooting, Portsmouth Police officers arrived at the scene to find Martin suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite any efforts to render aid, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the location.
