In the late summer of 2023, the life of 14-year-old Emuel “fatty” Winston was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. The male teenager was killed on September 23, 2023, in the South Norfolk/Campostella area of Chesapeake, Virginia. The shooting, which took place on Drayton Road, resulted in injuries to four other individuals, two of whom sustained permanent physical harm.
The Chesapeake Police Department launched an investigation into the incident that shattered a community and
left a family grappling with an unimaginable loss. Emuel’s parents, Shannon and Clayton Winston, described the ordeal as a nightmare from which they could not awaken. In the wake of their son's death, they publicly pleaded for answers and justice.
Weeks after the fatal shooting, an arrest was made in connection with the case. Keyshawn Shannon was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder for his alleged role in Emuel Winston's death. In total, Shannon faced eight charges, which were divided between the Chesapeake Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court and the General District Court.
During a subsequent bond hearing, the judge denied Keyshawn Shannon's request for bond. Emuel's parents were present in the courtroom, marking the first time they came face-to-face with the individual accused of killing their son. They expressed their hope that the justice system would prevail and deliver the justice that their son deserved. The case is expected to proceed through the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
