In the winter of 2015, the family of Al-Tariq Tynes began a frantic search for the 26-year-old man after he vanished from Portsmouth, Virginia, on December 10th. For weeks, his loved ones held onto hope for his safe return. This hope, however, turned to grief when his body was discovered in a ditch in neighboring Chesapeake in early January 2016. The discovery confirmed their worst fears: Al-Tariq Tynes had been murdered just two days after his 27th birthday.
The investigation into the
death of the young father, who worked at a shipyard and was attending college, soon uncovered a dark connection to gang violence. Authorities identified members of the Nine Trey Gangsters, a street gang affiliated with the United Blood Nation, as being responsible for his death. It was revealed that Al-Tariq Tynes was not involved in any gang activity himself.
Ultimately, two men were brought to justice for their roles in the murder. Anthony Foye, a member of the Nine Trey Gangsters, pleaded guilty to the murder of Al-Tariq Tynes, as well as the murders of three other individuals. His motive was reportedly to build a reputation as a 'shooter' within the gang. Foye received a mandatory life sentence for his crimes. Another man, Alvaughn Davis, also a member of the same gang, pleaded guilty to his involvement, which included helping to hide Tynes' body. Davis agreed to a 45-year prison sentence for his part in the crime.
