In the late morning of a summer Saturday in Sumter, South Carolina, the life of 25-year-old Adrian NaBryce McCray, a male resident of the community, was tragically cut short. On August 5, 2023, at approximately 11 a.m., McCray was discovered lying on the ground outside a convenience store located in the 500 block of Boulevard Road. He had sustained a gunshot wound and was swiftly transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, McCray succumbed to his injuries hours later, surrounded by his family.
The Sumter Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. Their inquiries soon pointed to an acquaintance of McCray, 43-year-old Travis Jermaine Wright, also of Sumter. Investigators learned that Wright had been near the A&P Coastal Mart around the time of the incident. As the investigation progressed, law enforcement identified Wright as the suspected shooter, and a warrant for his arrest on the charge of murder was issued. Authorities also released information that Wright might be driving a 2021 Volkswagen Golf, which was seen in the vicinity after the shooting.
For two weeks, law enforcement sought the public's help in locating Wright. The search came to a peaceful end when, on a Tuesday, Travis Jermaine Wright voluntarily surrendered to the Sumter Police Department. Following his surrender, he was formally charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. At the time of the incident, Wright was already facing a pending charge of third-degree domestic violence from an arrest that occurred just days before the fatal shooting. While an arrest has been made, the motive for the shooting has not been publicly released.
