On a September evening in the Cherryvale community of Sumter, South Carolina, 22-year-old Michael Sigler, Jr. was walking down a road, accompanied by his father and 19-year-old Christopher Antonio Thompson. Their walk was violently interrupted when a vehicle pulled up alongside them and multiple gunshots were fired from within. Both Sigler and Thompson were struck by the gunfire.
Emergency services were called, and the two young men were rushed to a local hospital, but their injuries proved to be fatal. Sigler's father, who was also present during the attack, was unharmed.
The vehicle used in the shooting was later identified as one that had been reported stolen from a Sumter County residence just days prior to the incident. An investigation led by the Sumter County Sheriff's Office began to unravel the events that led to the tragic deaths of the two young men.
In the course of their investigation, authorities identified three suspects. Sierra Renee Wilson was identified as the individual who had stolen the vehicle used in the shooting. On November 12, she was arrested and faced charges of grand larceny, financial transaction card theft, and two counts of murder. A day later, on November 13, Armonie Freeman was taken into custody at the residence of the third suspect. Freeman was charged with a litany of offenses, including possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, criminal conspiracy, two counts of murder, obstruction of justice, and drug-related charges.
The third suspect, Trayvuane Scott, was identified as the driver of the stolen vehicle at the time of the shooting. After a brief foot chase, he was apprehended in a wooded area behind his home. Evidence linking the stolen vehicle to the murders was discovered, solidifying the case against the three individuals. The motive for the shooting was not immediately released by law enforcement.
