On October 30, 2018, Marcus Brown, a 54-year-old man, was simply taking a moment to relax in his vehicle outside of his sister's home. In an instant, the tranquility was shattered by a spray of gunfire from a passing car, and a life was senselessly cut short.
Marcus Brown was struck by the gunfire and later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a grim reality: Marcus Brown was not the intended target. Law enforcement officials believe the actual target was a man named Kalvin Epps, who was associated with the residence Brown was parked in front of and was allegedly involved in a series of shootings in the area. These shootings were reportedly the result of an ongoing dispute between rival groups, a conflict that tragically and randomly claimed the life of an innocent bystander. Brown, a man with no connection to the criminal activities that led to his death, was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
For years, the case remained a source of pain and unanswered questions for the Brown family and the Sumter community. Investigators were frustrated by the lack of cooperation from individuals who may have had information about the shooting. However, in June 2021, a significant breakthrough occurred. Tas'Je Shakur Spann, who was already incarcerated on unrelated murder charges, was charged in connection with the death of Marcus Brown.
